Our Top Release of 2025: The Artist's Lux Secures the Number One Position.

On the surface, this album may look closer to an arduous scholarly examination rather than a new pop album from a musician whose last hit featured an international pop icon. Broken across 4 different sections and sung in 13 languages, it is a breathtaking classical-tinged opus that delves into female mystery, spiritual transcendence, and corporal change, frequently via the prism of different saintly figures. The end of a love affair—a theme treated with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is launched skyward here, supported by the constant sound of a full orchestra and work from an award-winning composer among an extensive list of contributors. The pure audacity alone makes the efforts of other pop stars look rather modest.

Transcending Scholarly Exercise

That Lux succeeds in escape overly academic chin-stroking feels almost a miracle, with complete praise going to Rosalía. While it's not the first time album to blend the past with the present, the stakes are far greater here, and the balancing act more dramatic. The element that truly raises this fourth release, outside of its multilayered melodies, dense arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is an essential sense of joy. Similar to the legendary Björk at her height, there is a captivating quality to Rosalía's voice which sweeps the listener into its tornado. When she's breaking hearts apart, the listener nevertheless want to be right there through the journey.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

This exuberant spirit comes forth brightly during the stunning Italian song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool over more than four moments. Suddenly, everything falls silent, and we hear a gleeful giggle and a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated string surge thuds down with comedic impact. The track then segues into the wild single featuring racing strings, a powerful choir, and a cameo appearance from none other than Björk.

"The charm with Lux lies in the listener never quite understand—or even wish to predict—where it is going to next."

Almost every track finishes in a totally different place from how it started. A track explores the fleeting trappings of fame over a delicate symphony before disintegrating into digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a song that recalls her previous trap-infused work begins out dark and brooding, with menacing beats, before sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic choir enter to soften the song's jagged corners.

The Bridge Of Art & Pop

Another crucial balancing act on the album involves straddling the gap between bold experimentation and broad appeal. This is little surprise that it has become her highest-charting release to break into the upper reaches of major markets: its heart contains a suite of truly undeniable hits. One track sung primarily in English builds around a chorus that seems to gather more and more nagging hooks as it spirals skyward. This feat gets echoed by a different expansive track that grows and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes as an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms via its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture honesty of contemporary breakup songs, eviscerating an ex- lover described as an "emotional bully".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a sharp smile, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

Lux represents pop on a maximalist scale, a hungry reach for capital-A artistry amid of impending artificial sameness. It eschews solipsism for sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully manages its inherent ridiculousness. It is an abundant source of buried treasure that requires time to completely mine but doesn't feels like hard work. Where other major releases of 2025 felt like a meager scraps, Lux is a sumptuous banquet at which the characters at it, some tipsy on sacred wine, flit from conversations about ancient figures, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking grief, and common gossip about useless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's most restlessly inventive visionary.
